1) Understand Canine Behavior

Dr. Youting Li From Animals Aid , Melbourne says “Before you can effectively train your dog, you have to understand canine behavior. While all dogs are ultimately individuals, there are some generalizations we can make about their behavioral patterns“.

Dogs that don’t receive enough exercise (about an hour per day) tend to develop negative behavior traits such as chewing, digging and barking.

So before you try and correct bad habits with your dog, take some time to exercise him properly so he isn’t bored when he starts misbehaving.

If you try and correct mis-behavior without figuring out why it’s happening in the first place, then it won’t be as effective and might just frustrate both of you even more! To help prevent behavioral problems, do training exercises with your pup every day.

2. Set Ground Rules

Dr. Sara J at Hampton Vet Clinic says “One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to training their dog is not setting clear, consistent ground rules. Whether you’ve just adopted your pup or are training an older dog, it’s essential that you set rules for your pet’s behavior“

Dogs will use all means necessary—yes, even bad behavior—to get what they want.

This includes but isn’t limited to: barging into someone else’s space (even if they’re small), jumping up and knocking things over, pulling at their leash and ignoring commands.

All of these behaviors can be stopped by putting some hard-and-fast rules in place early on.

Set clear expectations around where dogs can and cannot go as well as what kinds of behaviors are considered inappropriate.

3) Choose the Right Collar

When it comes to collars, it’s all about personal preference. Some dogs look better in certain collars than others, and some dogs might be more comfortable with certain collars as well.

Dr. Zoe Adams , from St Kilda Vets  Says “It’s  important to consider your dog’s breed when Choosing the right collar —some are big enough that they can slip out of almost any collar (Labrador Retrievers, Saint Bernards), while others (Chihuahuas) need a specific size collar or they could choke themselves“

In most cases, you’ll want at least two collars: one for daily wear and one that stays in your pet first aid kit.

4) Create Appropriate Play Time

Dr. Maya Zamir , Malvern Vet Clinic says “Once you set up rules and boundaries for your dog, be sure that every person in your family follows them”

Consistency will reinforce good behavior in your dog. I often say that dogs are more like children than they are like adults; they want what they want and when they want it.

5) Consistency Is Key

The number one tip when it comes to training your dog has nothing to do with specific commands or tricks. It’s about consistency.

Dr. Shannon Currin  From Animal Emergency centre , Melbourne  says “The more you train your dog, and you stick with it, whether it’s just for five minutes or 45 minutes, every day, you’ll quickly see that training comes more naturally“

But if you’re inconsistent — even by only skipping one or two days a week — your dog won’t really learn what behavior works and what doesn’t.

And if he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do in certain situations (like waiting at doors), it can be really hard on both of you.

6) Create a proper Routine

Whenever you train your dog, take a few minutes before beginning to determine what worked and what didn’t.

Why? Because it will help you create an appointment routine that works for you and your pup.

Dogs are creatures of habit, so establishing good habits in training should pay off for both of you in many ways.

You know how every morning at 8:00 AM you make yourself some toast with peanut butter?

Create a proper routine for training with your dog so he knows exactly what behavior you’re going to work on.

Then stick with it! If he knows that Mondays are his drop on recall days, he won’t have any more excuses when Friday rolls around!

7) The Importance of Exercise

Dr. James Berman , Sydney Vet Clinic says “There are more benefits of exercise than just looking good: Research has shown that staying active can help you live longer, protect against disease and boost your mood.”

The most important thing to remember when training your dog—and yourself—is that consistency is key.

It may be tempting to take a break or skip an exercise session if things get busy.

However, it’s imperative that you stick with it in order for your pet (or child) to learn new habits.

If you ever experience any setbacks or failures, don’t get discouraged—remember that all dogs have different personalities and abilities and some will pick up on new tricks faster than others.

Each dog has his own unique set of needs and training times can vary depending on breed, age and past experiences. Be patient!
