If you’ve heard of freeze-dried dog food, you may be wondering what it is and whether you can feed it to your dog.
These days, raw dog food that has been freeze-dried is very popular. Why? By preserving vital nutrients in raw food ingredients through freeze-drying, a shelf-stable and portable dog food product is created. While most kibble is baked, which depletes it part of its nutritional value.
Because you can get the healthiest ingredients without having to keep dog food in the fridge or freezer, many consumers believe it to be a healthier alternative to commercial kibble. Our assessments of freeze-dried dog food include our best recommendations as well as information on the dubious safety of raw dog food.
In order to learn more about freeze-dried dog food, we talked to Dr James Berman, a veterinary journalist and Vet with Petpawshub Blogs Team.
What is Freeze-Dried Dog food?
If you have not heard about Freeze- Dried Dog food, here we go..Although some dehydrated dog food is freeze-dried, not all dehydrated dog food is. According to Dr Irene, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and professor Vet at The University of Melbourne
“dehydrated food is often one where the water is removed using warm air,” as opposed to the cold-temperature procedure used to freeze-dry.
The compositions of freeze-dried dog food are as varied as those of other dog diets, ranging from high-protein to high-fat/moderate-protein to variants that resemble regular kibble and contain carbohydrates like potatoes and lentils. According to Irene, the proteins and, in certain cases, the starches in any of these freeze-dried types are still regarded as uncooked.
In light of all of this, the finest freeze-dried dog food will depend on your pet’s preferences, the foods you feel comfortable giving her, and the parts of her diet you intend to utilise it for.
Many well-known dog food companies now provide freeze-dried recipes. The following businesses sell freeze-dried dog food:
If you’re looking for food that has specifically undergone the previously described high-pressure pasteurisation process, Primal utilises it for its raw poultry products, including the grain- and gluten-free freeze-dried nuggets that it also touts as being full and balanced.
For its freeze-dried products, Stella & Chewy’s also employs HPP, as do Vital Essentials Raw, Northwest Naturals, and an ever-growing number of other companies.

Promising Review
My dog is very picky. I’ve tried so many dog food toppers to encourage her to eat her dry food. I’ve tried pouches, cans, dust, eggs, shredded cheese, fish, and freeze-dried pellets. She likes this food.
She eats everything as soon as I feed her. The bag usually has about half intact discs, and half powdered discs when we receive it so after we go through all the discs I use a 1/4 cup and mix with water. It’s not a big deal sometimes I empty the remaining powder into a jar for easier access.
It’s a little pricey but I find the cost worth the peace of mind that my dog is eating and is getting something nutritious- Ziomatra
